Acherontia atropos is one of three species of death’s-head hawk moth. It is found throughout much of Africa, including South Africa, as well as the Middle East, Mediterranean, and parts of Europe. Due to the skull-like marking on its thorax, Acherontia atropos is surrounded by superstition. This moth can actually squeak when its irritated. It can also safely raid beehives due to its resistance to venom and ability to imitate the scent of honeybees!
